"Hazardous Cargoes" by Jacob M Appel
This story comes from the collection "Scouting for the Reaper" written by Jacob M Appel.
This
story was a fun little story. The description was done well and I
found myself laughing during some of the story. There were some
humorous parts to picture.
The
story follows a trucker hauling penguins and some other zoo animals.
While he is driving one night he finds a stowaway in his cab.
He remembers when he was a runaway around that age and a trucker who
picked him up and was like a father to him. Then he finds out the
stowaway is a girl. Afraid of what she could imply he did to her he
tries to play it cool.
She
is on her way to Richmond, but he is heading to Orlando. They agree on
a middle point where he would drop her off. As they drive along they
start to get to know each other a little bit. He tries to figure out
why she is running away and she plays coy not wanting to tell him. They
have some back and forth until part of the secret is out in the open.
Unfortunately fate has some other plans for the both of them after they
leave a diner and hit the road again.
The
theme of the story was thin and the characters were not all that
developed. They didn't have as much depth as some of his previous
stories in the collection. Just a run of the mill short story.
This was a cute story, but nothing that really stood out to me. It was easy reading and had some cliché tender moments in the
story. The story wasn't one of the stronger stories in this collection
in my opinion. Not quite a filler story, but kind of reminded me of
one.
