“A Lunar Labyrinth”
by Neil Gaiman
A dark and mysterious maze.
A stranger as a guide and someone out seeking to adventure in the
unknown or at least the lesser known of things in the world.
In the introduction Neil Gaiman talks about what made him
write this story. He got the idea from a
story called “A Solar Labyrinth” by Gene Wolfe.
He said that if there is a solar maze there must be a lunar maze
somewhere as well. And why not have a
wolf (or Wolfe) in the story as well!
During the story an old man acts as a guide for a traveler
who was seeking out the Lunar Labyrinth.
It turns out the labyrinth was burned down. I wish the story would of gone more into why
the maze was burned down. It does make
some references to why it could have been burned down, but nothing
concrete. It doesn’t seem that the maze
was evil in any way.
The maze was used during different phases of the moon for
different purposes. It healed the sick,
restored love between lovers, and introduced lust where it was needed. Children played in the maze and parents
brought them to run the maze.
The old man recounts all of these tales about what the maze
was used for before they burned it down.
It has slightly grown back and the traveler gets to see parts of it, and
as he steps into the maze you hear a wolf howl.
I thought this was just an ok story. It didn’t quite feel like it was going
anywhere. Just more of a flowery piece
of writing and prose. There is a time
and place for that style of writing, and things that I’ve read by Neil Gaiman
definitely fall into flowery prose. He
is masterful at what he does, but I just have to be in the right mood for his
style of writing. I don’t think I was
for this story. It just didn’t do much
for me.
