“Picking Splinters
From A Sex Slave” by Brian Kirk
This story was published in “Gutted: Beautiful Horror
Stories” anthology edited by Doug Murano and D. Alexander Ward.
Where to begin with this story… This is an extremely intimate story. You are inside a father’s head who is trying
to restore life into his daughter who was kidnapped and lived in a box for six
years. She has stunted growth and a
forever bent neck because the box was too small to straighten out.
This is also a dark and disturbing story. I can’t remember the last time a story has
made me sit there and consider what a character would have to live through, or
the things he would have to do. I had an
emotional reaction to this story. And it
didn’t just go away, but stuck with me for quite some time after reading the
story.
What a father will do for their family, for his
daughter. The pain he would have to live
with knowing what he must do to keep his daughter “happy.” Heart-wrenching and twisted and dark and
disturbing.
Oddly Brian Kirk keeps humor in this story. He manages the humor well even for the type of
story being told. This is by far the
best short story I’ve read in a long time.
His writing is awesome, the style just flows. Easy to read and just keep going, before you
know it your at the end of the story.
Possibly with tears in your eyes, or a WTF moment. Definitely an Author to keep an eye out for.
